Computer Science Undergraduate Student Board Constitution

Article I

Name

The name of this organization shall be the Computer Science Undergraduate Student Board.

Article II

Purposes

Whereas the Purdue Department of Computer Science is ever-growing and improving, the Computer Science Undergraduate Student Board exists to assist the department in its evolution by providing a means for the faculty and administration to interact with a select group of students to discuss the student perspective on the events and policies of the department; thereby further improving the quality of the department. The goals of the board include:

  • Reducing the gap between the students and the faculty by showing the concerns of the students,
  • Facilitating the flow of communication between the faculty, staff, corporate partners and the students,
  • Providing the computer science student body with a means of affecting the policy decisions of the department,
  • Allowing the students, faculty, and administration of the computer science department easy access to dedicated, motivated students to help in departmental programs and recruitment operations,
  • And to expose all students to opportunities after Computer Science at Purdue.

Article III

Membership

Membership in the Computer Science Undergraduate Student Board is open to any Purdue University Computer Science Undergraduate student who is interested in issues and concerns with respect to computer science, the department, and the curriculum. Membership and participation are free from discrimination based on race, religion, color, sex, age, national origin or ancestry, marital status, parental status, sexual orientation, disability, or status as a disabled or Vietnam-era veteran. Members of the board will be expected to have a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or greater and a cumulative Grade Point Average in his or her computer science courses of 3.25 or greater. The member must also show substantial interest and activity in the department itself. Those candidates who are close but do not quite meet these Grade Point Average requirements, but who do show exceptional interest and activity in the department may also be considered for membership. The Undergraduate Student Board shall consist of no less than six members: there shall be a minimum of two seniors, two juniors, and two sophomores among the members of the board. There shall be a cap on the number of members as well. The maximum is set to four seniors, four juniors, and four sophomores on the board, thus giving a maximum of 12 members on any one board. If in the future, the board sees that its responsibilities are increasing, the board may then decide to increase this cap by amendment of this Constitution. If the board decides that a member should be asked to leave, they may do so by a majority vote. New members will only be added at the end of a semester even if a member quits, is asked to leave, or is away from campus for an extended period of time. If the member does not quit or is not asked to leave, then he/she may rejoin the board when he/she returns to campus. Adjunct membership is open to any Purdue University faculty or staff member. A Purdue University staff or faculty member may not vote or hold office. The faculty advisor holds adjunct membership to the board. There shall be no membership dues.

Initial Board

The initial board was founded by senior members Curtis Alan Knapp and Stephanie Kaye Scherer and shall consist of nine members. The members were chosen by the senior members with a resume screening and interview process. Suggestions for membership were given to the senior members by the undergraduate computer science counselors. The other members of the initial board are juniors Robyn Bognar, Craig Hanna, and David Koenig and sophomores Kevin Hein, Andy Kuker, Paul Pearcy, and Nicholas Reed.

Article IV

Board Structure

The leadership structure of the Computer Science Undergraduate Student Board will consist of a board Chairman and Co-Chairman. They shall be chosen in a manner best seen fit by the board. They shall serve for a term of one year unless reelected. Experience of at least two semesters on the board is needed for eligibility to hold an office. If no eligible members are interested in the offices, the positions will be opened to everyone.

Members will serve on the board for the entire length of their undergraduate studies. Members whose Computer Science Undergraduate studies exceed four years are eligible for adjunct membership on the board in their final semesters. Each member may undergo an evaluation process at the end of each year to confirm that he/she performed his/her duties in accordance with the high expectations and responsibilities placed upon a board member. New candidates for board membership will be evaluated in a manner seen fit by the board, such as a resume screening and interview process. The new board members will shadow the current members and officially take office the last day of the school year.

The advisors for the Computer Science Undergraduate Student Board shall be either faculty or staff and shall be chosen by the board.s members. An advisor shall serve a term until he/she resigns or is asked to resign by the officers. While an advisor is a member of the Undergraduate Student Board, he/she shall only act as a liaison between the organization, the computer science department, and the university. The advisor may not vote, hold office, or control the organization. In addition to meeting with the advisor, the board may meet with a small group of faculty and staff members to discuss current issues in the board and in the department. This small group of faculty and staff members will then be responsible for voicing the opinions and concerns of the board to the rest of the faculty.

Article V

Officers and Duties

  • Chairman:
    • Primary contact person for the board.
    • Responsible for coordinating communication and activities between board members.
    • The Chairman is the president of the organization.

  • Co-chairman:
    • Secondary contact person.
    • Responsible for assisting the Chairman in his/her duties.
    • The Co-Chairman is the organization's treasurer. The treasurer keeps accounts, deposits the organization's funds, and makes expenditures in a manner approved by the Business Office for Student Organizations.

  • Board Member:
    • Performs various tasks designated by the board.
    • Each member will be equally responsible for accomplishing the goals of the board.

  • Board Shadows:
    • The board may also choose a maximum of two freshmen to serve as shadow members of the board. The shadows will be allowed to attend board meetings and assist in board decisions and events, but they will not be eligible to vote. The choice of freshmen shadows shall be done in a fashion agreed upon by board members.

Article VI

Amendments

Amendments to the constitution shall be approved by a majority vote of the members present at time of elections. All amendments to the constitution and bylaws are subject to the approval of the Office of the Dean of Students. Amendments may not take effect until approved by the Office of the Dean of Students.
